Walking games
Walking apps like Pokemon GO that do not need GPS
Short answer: a step-counter game. Walkr, Wokamon, Fantasy Hike, Zombies, Run! in Step Counting mode and Chonky Corgo (ours) all play from your step or distance count, with no location needed. Pikmin Bloom and Monster Hunter Now feel closest to Pokemon GO, but both need location too. Choose by your reason for leaving: battery, safety, or nothing nearby.
Most people who search for this liked Pokemon GO and hit a problem that has nothing to do with Pokemon: a phone that is flat by mid-afternoon, a walk that feels unsafe with your eyes on a screen, or a map with nothing on it within walking distance.
Each problem has a different best answer, so this page sorts the alternatives by reason instead of ranking them. A disclosure first: this site belongs to Chonky Corgo, one of the apps in the table, and its row carries a weakness like every other row.
Why look for a Pokemon GO alternative without GPS?
Three reasons come up again and again. Battery: Pokemon GO's own App Store listing warns that continued GPS use in the background can dramatically reduce battery life. Safety: the game wants your eyes on the screen while you cross roads. Geography: a location game is only as good as the map around your house, and rural maps are thin.
Does Pokemon GO's Adventure Sync already fix this?
Only partly. Adventure Sync credits distance walked while Pokemon GO is closed, which hatches Eggs, earns Buddy Candy and counts toward weekly rewards. The Pokemon GO Help Center says Adventure Sync needs Apple Health and location permission set to Always, so it adds background location use rather than removing it.
The same help pages list three more limits:
- Adventure Sync needs Trainer Level 5 or above.
- Steps typed into Apple Health by hand do not count, and syncing can lag by several hours.
- Catching, PokeStops and raids are not among the things Adventure Sync credits. Those still happen on the live map.
Which walking games like Pokemon GO work without location?
Six of the nine apps below play from a step or distance count and never need to know where you are: Walkr, Wokamon, Fantasy Hike, Zombies, Run! in Step Counting mode, WalkScape and Chonky Corgo. Pokemon GO, Pikmin Bloom and Monster Hunter Now all need location to play. The table shows what each one costs you.
| App | Needs location to play? | What your walking does | Free tier and paid options | Apple Watch app | US ratings, 30 Sep 2026 | Real weakness |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pokemon GO (the baseline) | Yes, and Adventure Sync needs location set to Always | Distance hatches Eggs and earns Buddy Candy | Free, with PokeCoin packs and event tickets | No | 654,165 | Needs a busy map: a 2016 count found about 97 times fewer PokeStops per square kilometre in the most rural US counties. Its own listing warns that background GPS can dramatically reduce battery life |
| Pikmin Bloom | Yes, with Always recommended | Steps grow seedlings into Pikmin | Free, with coin packs and storage upgrades | No | 68,975 | New seedlings come from walking in many different places, so a fixed loop or a treadmill finds fewer. Same background GPS battery warning as Pokemon GO |
| Monster Hunter Now | Yes, and Adventure Sync needs Always Allow | Distance lets your Palico mark monsters to hunt later | Free, with Gem packs and a Prime Hunter's Pass | No | 48,995 | Hunts are 75-second fights on the screen, which makes it the least eyes-free option here |
| Walkr | No, and its listing says location can be switched off | Steps fuel a spaceship toward new planets | Free, with cube packs, an Ads Remover and a SPARKFUL subscription | No | 8,043 | Free play shows ads, premium cube packs run up to $99.99, and no Apple Watch app is listed |
| Wokamon | No. Its listing says background GPS is needed only on the iPhone 4 to 5C | Steps feed, grow and collect Wokamons | Free, with Topaz packs | Listed, needing watchOS 2.0 or later | 1,536 | Ads play when the app opens, and every update listed since January 2024 is a stability fix |
| Fantasy Hike | No. Its support page says it does not store location | Distance moves you along a trail to Mount Fire | Free with a daily distance cap, lifted by rewarded ads, a one-time unlock or Premium | No, but it reads Watch distance through Apple Health | 14,949 | The free tier caps daily distance, and the quest ends at Mount Fire |
| Zombies, Run! | No, thanks to a Step Counting mode for indoors | An audio story plays as you run or walk | One free mission a week, and a membership for the rest | Yes | 24,091 | Built around running, and the story needs headphones in, which cuts how much traffic you hear |
| WalkScape | No. Its help page says 'No GPS' | Steps power skills in an open-world RPG | Closed beta, planned as free-to-play with paid options | Its help page says smartwatches work | Not on the App Store | Invite only, through TestFlight on iPhone, and most applicants wait a few months |
| Chonky Corgo (ours) | No. Reads your daily step count from Apple Health and does not request location | Each 250 steps charges an attack on the day's monster, and each goal day advances the adventure at the same pace | Free to download, with Chonky Club, Gem packs and playsets. Signed-in adults may see one small banner ad, on by default and off in Settings | Yes, since version 2.0 (30 Sep 2026): steps, goal progress and Trail Walks. Fights stay on iPhone | 0 | No map and no real places, so nothing to discover down a new street and no landmark to meet other players at. The game needs an iPhone, and it has zero ratings so far |
One pattern surprised us. Seven of the eight App Store listings in the table, all except Chonky Corgo's, carry this line under Location: 'This app may use your location even when it isn't open, which can decrease device battery life.' Not needing GPS to play is not the same as never asking for it.
Privacy labels are a separate matter. Every App Store listing in the table except Wokamon's declares some location data. Chonky Corgo's label lists coarse location, which Apple defines as less precise than a latitude and longitude to three decimal places, and Chonky Corgo does not request location permission.
Which app fits if battery is the problem?
Pick a game that reads a count your iPhone already keeps. Apple says the Health app automatically counts your steps and walking distance. Chonky Corgo and Wokamon read steps and Fantasy Hike reads walking distance, all through Apple Health, while Walkr uses the phone's pedometer. None of them needs to track you on a map.
Then open Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Location Services, and set a step-counter game to While Using or Never. Walkr's listing says its location can be switched off this way. Other apps may lose a background feature, so watch what still updates.
Which app fits if safety is the worry?
One that does not need your eyes during the walk. A 2017 CHI study surveyed 375 Pokemon GO players in five countries. A third reported a near miss or collision, mostly with signs, poles and other people, and 11% recalled putting themselves at risk, for example by crossing a street without looking.
Pokemon GO's own Safety FAQ asks players to judge which areas feel safe at which times of day. A step-counter game lets you pick the route. Chonky Corgo banks steps from Apple Health and each 250 charges an attack, so the phone can stay in a pocket until you sit down, and Zombies, Run! keeps your eyes up with audio.
Which app fits if there is nothing near you?
Any game that counts steps rather than places, because a step in a village lane is worth the same as a step downtown. Location games depend on map density. The 2017 CHI study counted about 2.9 PokeStops per square kilometre in core urban US counties and 0.03 in the most rural ones, roughly 97 times fewer.
That count dates from 2016 and the map has grown since, so read it as a direction rather than a figure. For a treadmill, WalkScape and Wokamon name treadmills in their own descriptions, Zombies, Run! has Step Counting mode, and Chonky Corgo reads a daily step count, which does not record where the steps happened.
What do you give up without GPS?
Real places. Pokemon GO puts game spots on historical sites and public artwork, according to its Safety FAQ, so a street you have walked for years suddenly has things on it, and you meet other players at the same landmark. No step-counter game can do that, and anyone who loved that part will miss it.
Some games offer play at a distance instead. Pikmin Bloom's Weekly Challenges pool steps with friends wherever they live, Walkr has fleets, and Chonky Corgo 2.0, out since 30 September 2026, adds Packs of up to 6 walkers who sign in with Apple and hit one shared Team Battle boss. Whether a game is the right fix at all is covered in how to make walking more fun.
Which one should you try first?
Match the app to the reason you are leaving. If battery is the reason, try a game that reads Apple Health, such as Walkr or Chonky Corgo. If safety is the reason, try Zombies, Run! for audio or Chonky Corgo to keep the phone pocketed. If nothing is near you, any step-counter game in the table works.
Fantasy Hike suits people who want a trail with a finish line, and Fantasy Hike alternatives covers what to try once it ends. Chonky Corgo is our game, so weigh this accordingly: Chonky Corgo suits someone who wants a story and a fight out of an ordinary walk, and it is the wrong pick if finding places was what you loved about Pokemon GO.
What else do people ask?
Three questions that come up once people realise the problem is the GPS rather than the walking. Each answer names its source, because details like these change with app updates, and the date at the top of this page tells you how old the snapshot is.
- Can you play Pokemon GO without GPS?
- Not in any useful way. Pokemon GO's App Store listing says compatibility is not guaranteed on devices without GPS, and Adventure Sync, the feature that counts walking while the app is closed, needs location permission set to Always, according to the Pokemon GO Help Center.
- Is there a walking game like Pokemon GO for rural areas?
- Yes, any game that runs on a step count rather than a map. Walkr, Wokamon, Fantasy Hike and Chonky Corgo all work that way, because a step count carries no location. Pikmin Bloom feels closer to Pokemon GO but still needs location and rewards walking in new places.
- Can I play WalkScape on iPhone yet?
- Only by invitation. WalkScape's help page describes the game as a closed beta, offered on iPhone through TestFlight. The same page says most applicants wait a few months for an invite, and supporters on Patreon or Buy Me a Coffee get one straight away.
